Arunachalam Muruganantham is a celebrated social entrepreneur and inventor who is the visionary behind a groundbreaking, low-cost sanitary pad making machine. His life's work is a powerful case study in grassroots innovation and addressing a profound public health crisis by generating awareness about unhygienic traditional practices around menstruation in rural India.
His company, Jayaashree Industries, innovated and implemented a small-scale sanitary napkin-making machine that costs approximately Rs. 65,000, in stark contrast to large-scale industrial models requiring Rs. 3.5 Crores. This low-cost, decentralized model has been transformative, enabling smaller players to adopt his business model and successfully generating employment and wealth in the most neglected sections of society. His mini-machines, which produce pads for less than a third of the commercial cost, have been installed in 23 of the 29 states of India.
Muruganantham’s unwavering commitment to this social mission has earned him global recognition. He was placed in TIME magazine’s list of 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2014 and was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2016. His inspiring story has also been the subject of the prize-winning documentary Menstrual Man and the celebrated Bollywood blockbuster Padman.
As a highly sought-after speaker, he has delivered lectures at prestigious institutions worldwide, including IIT Bombay, IIM Ahmedabad, Harvard, and a TED talk. His presentations offer profound insights into social entrepreneurship, innovation, and micro-finance, demonstrating how a single idea, rooted in empathy and low-cost technology, can achieve both scalable commercial success and massive, positive social impact.
