Geeta Phogat is a trailblazing Indian icon and a legendary wrestler, best known for being the first Indian woman to win a gold medal in wrestling at the Commonwealth Games (2010) and the first Indian woman wrestler to qualify and compete at the Olympics (London 2012). Her life story is a powerful narrative of defying patriarchal societal norms in Haryana, transforming wrestling into a viable career path for women across the country.

Trained under her father, former wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, Geeta started wrestling at a young age, leading her to rapid success. Her career-defining moment came at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, where she clinched India’s first-ever gold medal in women's wrestling (55kg). This victory was a major milestone, and her subsequent qualification for the 2012 London Games opened the door for female Indian wrestlers internationally. She also earned a World Wrestling Championships bronze medal in 2012.

Geeta’s contributions to Indian sports were recognized with the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2012. Despite a career later beset by injuries, which required surgery and prevented her from regular competition, she maintained her high-level performance, winning gold at the 2017 Commonwealth Championships. Her journey is a profound illustration of sheer grit and determination to overcome various hardships and obstacles to chalk out her path.
