Irina Bokova

Former Director-General of UNESCO; Expert on Global Governance and Soft Power

Irina Bokova is a distinguished Bulgarian politician, diplomat, and institutional leader, celebrated for serving as the Director-General of UNESCO for eight years (2009–2017). She made history as the first Eastern European and first woman to lead the organization. Her mission is centered on advocating for cultural dialogue through respect, confronting terrorism and violent extremism, and championing the role of education and cultural heritage in sustainable development.

Bokova’s influential career began in the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and includes service as a Member of Parliament and European Affairs First Secretary. She later served as the Ambassador of Bulgaria to Monaco, France, and UNESCO, where her expertise led her to contribute significantly to the enactment of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, focusing on gender equality, excellent education, and cultural preservation. Her commitment to cultural protection was critical in denouncing the destruction of heritage during conflicts in Syria, Mali, and Iraq, which empowered the UN Security Council to develop new strategies for safeguarding culture during times of war.

A highly accomplished scholar, Bokova studied at Moscow, Washington, and Harvard University. She has been recognized as one of the world’s most influential women by Forbes and has received multiple honorary degrees, including from King’s College and the University of Geneva. This blend of high-level diplomacy, academic background, and institutional leadership defines her authority on global affairs.

At present, she continues to share her knowledge and expertise at institutions like PSIA and various universities worldwide. Her presentations offer corporate and governmental audiences critical insights into the challenges of global governance, the role of education in the future of work, the importance of women’s rights, and how to leverage soft power for achieving sustainable and equitable development goals.
