Prakash Padukone

First Indian to Win All England Open; World No. 1 Badminton (1980); Co-founder, Olympic Gold Quest

Prakash Padukone is an Indian badminton champion and global sports icon who became the first Indian to win the prestigious All England Open in 1980, a feat that catapulted him to the World No. 1 ranking. His career is defined by dominance and pioneering achievement, opening the door for Indian badminton on the international map.

Padukone's journey is a study in perseverance. After losing his first junior tournament, he won the state junior title two years later. He won the national senior championship at age 16 and went on to set a record of nine consecutive national titles. His international success includes a gold medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games. His greatest accomplishment—winning the All England Championship against one of the world's leading players—remains a cornerstone of Indian sporting history.

Following his retirement in 1991, Padukone dedicated himself to the sport's development. He served as the coach of the Indian national badminton team and co-founded Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ) with Geet Sethi, a foundation dedicated to the promotion of Olympic sports in India. He also founded the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, which has produced national champions and world-class coaches, including Pullela Gopichand.

A highly decorated athlete, Padukone was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1972 and the Padma Shri in 1982, two of India’s highest civilian honors. His keynotes, drawing on his decades of experience training in Denmark and competing against the world's best, offer audiences profound insights into the discipline, strategy, and mental fortitude required to transform an initial loss into ultimate World No. 1 status.
