Dr. Richard A. D’Aveni is the Bakala Professor of Strategy at Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business, where he has been a tenured faculty member for over three decades. He is a globally recognized authority on competitive dynamics and strategy, best known for his breakthrough book, Hypercompetition, which fundamentally reshaped how executives view marketplace stability. His unique expertise is built upon a foundation of law, finance, and deep academic research.

D’Aveni’s career path is marked by a blend of policy, finance, and academia. He worked on the staff of the Governor and House Speaker for the State of Massachusetts, earning two degrees while working full-time, and became a CPA while working in the tax division of Coopers & Lybrand. After earning his PhD from Columbia University, he joined the Tuck School in 1988, advancing to full professor by 1996. This diverse background allows him to serve as a straight shooter and honest referee for the world’s most powerful leaders.

His influence within the corporate sector is exceptional. D’Aveni has delivered keynote speeches to over two hundred Fortune 500 companies and conferences, and at one point served as advisor to half of the Fortune 10 CEOs. For over two decades, he was the principal advisor and sounding board for more than ten patriarchs of the Forbes top 100 richest families. He sets the tone and energizes large audiences at major events, including the World Economic Forum and the Consumer Electronics Show, by creating a powerful sense of urgency.

D’Aveni consults on a wide range of issues, from Competitive Dynamics to Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing), which he views as the next transformative digital revolution in manufacturing. His presentations provide executives with nitty-gritty insights into strategies like using aggressive market disruption and judo techniques to win, and developing counter-revolutionary strategies to buy time against competitors. He helps organizations overcome executive challenges, including Vision Setting and Managing Digital Disruption in Manufacturing, to thrive into the future.
