P Chidambaram

Economic policy should serve the many, not just the few.

P Chidambaram

Former Union Minister of Finance & Home Affairs (India); Senior Leader, Indian National Congress; Harvard Business School Alumnus

P. Chidambaram is an influential Indian politician, a highly respected lawyer, and a seasoned economist who currently serves as a Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha. His long and distinguished career includes four stints as Union Minister of Finance, where he pioneered historic tax reforms in 1997, dismantling India's high tax regime and overseeing an over 8 percent GDP growth in successive years.

Chidambaram’s influence is profound at the highest levels of Indian governance and international relations. He served as the Union Minister of Home Affairs (2008–2012), overseeing India’s domestic security response to the 26/11 terrorist attack in Mumbai and bolstering national security infrastructure, including setting up the National Investigation Agency. A six-time Parliamentarian, he was included in the Time 100 list in 2013 for his impact on global affairs.

A highly accomplished academic, he holds degrees in Statistics and Law, and a Master’s in Business Administration from Harvard University. He built a successful law practice, arguing cases before the Supreme Court of India before entering politics. His recent focus continues to be on analyzing India's economic health, often critically assessing current policies on growth, employment, and capital formation, asserting that the country is stuck in a lower-middle income trap.

As a speaker and senior leader of the Indian National Congress, Chidambaram is sought after for his expertise in global economic policy, financial sector reforms, and political trends. His presentations, which draw on his experience leading economic liberalization and his analysis of growth and employment figures, provide corporate and governmental audiences with unmatched, high-level insight into the strategic direction of Asia’s third-largest economy.
