Sudha Chandran

Iconic Dancer & Actress; Motivational Speaker; Pioneer of "Jaipur Foot" in Dance

Sudha Chandran is a celebrated Bharatanatyam and Kathak dancer, renowned actress, and highly inspiring motivational speaker whose life story is an unparalleled testament to willpower and determination in the face of tragedy. After a tragic bus accident at age 17 led to the amputation of her right leg due to medical error, she refused to be confined and became a pioneer by successfully returning to her dance career with a Jaipur foot.

Her commitment to dance was unwavering: after reading about the famous artificial limb specialist Dr. Sethi, she worked to have a customized Jaipur foot created for her dancing requirements. Her triumphant return to the stage on January 28, 1984, was a grand success, transforming her into an overnight star. This story was immediately made into the critically acclaimed Telugu film Mayuri, in which she played the lead role and won a special award—the Silver Lotus—from the President of India.

Beyond her dancing, Sudha has established a successful career in film and television, acting in more than 30 movies across different languages, including the Hindi remake Nache Mayuri. She is now considered one of the more flamboyant stars on Indian television. Her continued passion for dance is evident in her operation of a dance school in Mumbai, the Natya Mayuri Sudha Chandran Dance Academy.

As a highly popular motivational speaker, Sudha Chandran provides audiences with the tools they need to inspire themselves and one another to their greatest heights. She demonstrates that obstacles need not be problems, but can be growth opportunities. Her presentations are a powerful call to action, teaching that persistence and embracing the lessons of failure can enable one to achieve almost anything and cross their most challenging finish lines.
