Zoya Akhtar

Award-Winning Filmmaker & Screenwriter; Expert in Contemporary Indian Youth & Gender Dynamics; Founder, Tiger Baby Films

Zoya Akhtar is an award-winning director, producer, and screenwriter who is one of the few filmmakers to have beautifully and authentically captured contemporary India in her critically acclaimed films and series. Hailing from the distinguished Akhtar family, her career is a testament to establishing her own unmatched identity in the male-dominated directorial space of Hindi cinema.

Zoya’s films are centered in the real world, making them both accessible and critically acclaimed. Her notable works include Luck by Chance, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Dil Dhadakne Do, and Gully Boy, with her films earning her multiple accolades, including the Filmfare Award for Best Director twice. Her online series, Made in Heaven, has also been widely appreciated for its unapologetic depiction of societal dynamics, showcasing her commitment to telling compelling, socially relevant stories.

Having completed a diploma in filmmaking from NYU, Zoya assisted directors like Mira Nair before establishing her own distinct, trademark finesse that makes her movies stand out. Battling issues like gender inequality and sexism in Hindi cinema, she has worked hard to carve a place for herself that is unmatched, serving as a powerful role model for aspiring female filmmakers and leaders. In 2015, she co-founded the production company Tiger Baby Films with frequent collaborator Reema Kagti. As a speaker, Zoya Akhtar draws on her personal journey and professional success to deliver sessions that inspire creativity and positivism in her audience. She is a passionate voice on the mindset of India’s youth and gender equality, providing unique perspectives on dealing with challenges and successfully navigating a patriarchal industry through artistic and personal conviction.
